Support Services

GMAD has created services that support the health, well-being and independence of people living with or affected by HIV.
Objective of services: the overall goal of the Supportive Services Department(SSD) is to have in place, a mix of services that compliment other (HIV-specific and generic) health and social services, and enable black gay men living with HIV, substance abuse and some mental health issues to live independent lives and manage their condition in an effective way. The objectives of the SSD are to:

  • Ensure short-term, evidence-based individual and group support is available for clients in order to enable them to live full and independent lives.

  • Improve and increase access to mainstream health and social services for people living with HIV.

  • Increases access to HIV testing services for people affected by HIV.

  • Provide meaningful and useful peer support and training to health care and social services providers to ensure their services are appropriate for black gay men and are non-discriminating.

  • Promote self-management by providing those living with HIV, mental health and substance use issues with the necessary tools to manage their health and well-being.

  • Ensure that the range of services providing support and care to those living with HIV, mental health and substance use issues are well coordinated and networked.

The supportive services department provides myriad services, including:

Linkages & Partnerships: The SSD is dependent on effective partnership between providers of the supportive services and other health and social services providers. The SSD develops linkages with other providers in order to facilitate effective joint working and better access to services.
